Recently, the "Wukong" full-ocean-depth AUV set a new deep-diving record at the Mariana Trench once again — 10,896 meters! This surpasses the previous world deep-diving record of 10,028 meters achieved by a foreign AUV in May 2020.
The "Wukong" full-ocean-depth AUV was developed by the research team of Harbin Engineering University and had previously set an Asian deep-diving record of 7,709 meters. Delayed in conducting scientific expeditions at the Mariana Trench due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it finally obtained approval for deployment earlier this month and successfully completed its diving mission. Professor Li Ye, Chief Designer of the "Wukong" AUV and Vice Dean of the College of Shipbuilding Engineering, was moved to remark: "Four years, seven sea trials. Wipe the sweat from your brow, and the ten-thousand-meter seabed unfolds in all its clarity."
